As we head into fall, the Back-To-School, theaters, organizations, all have their calendars beckoning us to return.  Many of you have enjoyed the lovely weather this summer and you were able to go on longer flights.  We now go into a busier mode, and the airport remains open for service seven days a week.

While the prices for Jet A remain stable, there appears to be a shortage of avgas because of the floods in the midwest.  Perhaps the fires in Greece will be the excuse next month.  Nevertheless, the prices are obscene, but we are happy to have fuel.

This September we will once again host the Princeton Historical Society's Fall Antiques & Fine Arts Show (Read More Below).  Fall usually provides us with crisp, clear flying weather.  Let's hope so.

We are bringing back the SAFETY CORNER, which we recommend each and everyone of you read.

THE AMERICAN CHAMPION
"CHAMP" IS HERE!

This Light Airplane meets the requirements of a Sport Airplane as well as a certificated airplane!  If you have never been denied a medical, you can continue flying under the Sport Pilot Regulations.  (Read the Chief Pilot's column.)

"WOW,
That was
GREAT," exclaimed
Dick Nierenberg when he flew this brand new Champ around the patch.
Just like the plane I learned in, way back then!

LSA means Light Sport Aircraft

Lately, I have been asked by many pilots about the LSA rules.  Older pilots, and others, who are concerned about being unable to get their medical certificate issued at their next physical, want to know what the options are.  Let us take a look at the rules and make some sense of this topic.

For current pilots:

If you have a recreational pilot certificate, or higher (Private, Commercial) you may exercise the privileges of a sport pilot certificate, provided the holder complies with the privileges and limitations of the sport pilot certificate.  The important benefit for existing pilots is that the sport pilot requires only a valid state driver's license to establish your medical fitness.

COOLEST PLANE LAST MONTH

On one of those glorious days last month, this Pitts visited 39N.  What appropriate colors for the Princeton area!

 FAA CHARTS
  • The new Washington Sectionals and TACS are finally in stock.  The expiration date was postponed to accommodate the new regulations regarding Washington airspace.
  • With the October 26, '06 chart cycle, the FAA used a different finishing process to assure that sectionals would last six months without tearing on the seams.  You may emails them if you still have any issues at:9-ATOW-HW-Sectional-Chart-Paper@FAA.gov
  • Effective with the October 25th,'07 airspace cycle, the FAA will reconfigure the IFR Enroute Low Altitude Chart series for the Conterminous US.  The number of charts will increase from 28 to 36.  It appears that our area is in 33/34.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGER

It was a spectacular day for the twenty PAFT members and guests who flew to Martha's Vineyard to enjoy the fine cuisine, local sites, upscale shopping and some members even did a little sailing.

September will be a very active month for the club with several events planned.  Ron Goldfarb will host the PAFT meeting at Café Graziella on Wednesday September 19th, Paul Stephens will host the Fly-in to Williamsburg, VA on Sunday, September 16.

Ernie Schirmer has set up another tour of McGuire AFB with Lt. Col. Mark Ustaszewsk on Saturday, September 22nd.   So visit our website at paft-nj.org to sign up these activities.  If you are not a member, September may be a good month to join.

SAFETY CORNER

When doing your pre-flight inspection, pay special attention to the rudder control horn.
As you check the movement of the rudder, make sure that the horn strikes each limit bolt head squarely.  If it doesn't, the rudder horn could slip and lock against the bolt when a full strong rudder input is made. This advice is for Cessna 152s & 172s.

Of course, while you are looking, make sure the cable safety wires are securely fastened as well.
