Santa Fly-In: In 1983 we initiated our Santa Fly-In while we were at 47N. It was a modest event and everyone had fun. Over the years we have fine tuned the fly-in to make it run more smoothly and be more exciting. We've added an antique fir engine and folk singer, Pat McKinley, has become a regular part of the cast. We also require participants to bring something for the less fortunate.
Well, this year it was a blow-out. When United Way come for the gifts, they could barely fit the over 25 garbage sized bags in the van. Thank goodness for Lamar and his long reach - he was able to squeeze items in every nook and cranny. The driver was squeezed in. Since then, we gathered another 10 bags.
On the 24th member of PAFT arrived early to set up the cookies and cocoa. Special thanks to Ethel, Debbie, Scott, Sharon, Gus and Greg. You were superb.
But, of course, the highlight was Santa, (Airport Manager Ken Nierenberg) who gave a brief air show in a brand new Super Decathlon. (Do you know how hard it is to fly inverted with Santa's beard?) the over 350 kids and their parents and grandparents proved to be an enthusiastic audience. We estimate that about 1000 people enjoyed the day. We did not lose a gift and everyone was done by 1:00 p.m. The super event exemplifies how a local airport and the local community can benefit from each other.
