It’s very difficult to write about “What’s happening at 39N?” when it’s been a winter and month like the one just ending. We plowed, and we plowed, and we plowed. We fixed hangar doors which were under pressure from the roofs with piles of snow. We preheated airplanes in the arctic blast – not fun, and very little news.As we move forward with the threat of more snow, we’d like to give you a bit of history of 39N. March 29 will be 29 years that the Nierenbergs purchased the airport.
In the meantime, we do miss seeing all of you. So please come out of your warm homes and visit us.
29 Years and Counting…
In the early ’80s Dick, Naomi and Ken Nierenberg faced the dilemna of relocation – their 20 year lease at Kupper Airport (47N), now Central Jersey, was coming to an end and the option for renewal was out of the question.One day Ken burst into the office of Dick and Naomi and suggested we buy Princeton Airport which had been up for sale. His parents thought he was dreaming and it surely wasn’t possible. Undaunted, Ken persevered and on March 29, 1985 the sale was final.At the time, 39N was really dormant as it had been on the market for four years. So for two years Dick ran Princeton and Ken ran Kupper as the revenues from Kupper were needed to kick start the new one. Naomi opened a satellite flight school and spent half a day at each airport.The challenges were large, but now that we look back, it’s been a great ride.
The Biennial Flight Review comes around every two years. It is a chance to sit down with a Flight Instructor and review the flying you have done and ensure that you have the knowledge and ability to operate as the P I C for the next two years.
How do you prepare for the hour of ground time and the hour in the air? Do not wait until the day before your appointment to start cramming, especially if you haven’t flown for a while. Develop the habit of regularly reading the manuals and aviation materials if you are not in the air often.
After these many, many years of running an airport in all kinds of weather, we know how to get you into the air. Yes, we are flying. When snow is predicted, we put as many airplanes into the hangar as possible. This winter may force the Flying Tigers to make its next fly-in destination someplace farther south than usual – maybe south Florida. The date for February’s fly-in came and went without notice since looking outside was enough to make you think twice about doing an engine pre-heat and pre-flight!
The March 12th dinner meeting will be held in Hillsborough at the Cafe Graziella featuring guest speaker David Robinson, Chief Climatologist at Rutgers University. (Editor’s note – David can answer your questions about the changing weather – very interesting.)
