The indecisive weather has continued to make 2014 a challenging year. The good weather flying days have been few and far between. As we leave the month of April showers, showers have turned into torrents of rain.
Let’s hope May brings out those long awaited sunny days with no winds and next month’s newsletter will have lots of accomplishments.
NESTING TIME
As spring makes a strong presence, the birds are busy looking for a place to lay their eggs and nurture their young. Over the years, any opening in an airplane has been great nesting grounds, especially near the engine. Obviously, this could be disastrous.

Last week, I was asked about my recollections of my first night cross country flight. In late spring, 1964, I was at N.A.S. Whiting Field, north of Pensacola, FL, and about a third of the way through the Navy basic training syllabus. The airplane was a North American T-28 B.
I had already made day VFR cross country flights, so I was able to make the heading and time calculations, pick out check points along the route, list the necessary radio and VOR frequencies, and follow the tactical procedures. This was a solo flight, but I would be accompanied by several other solo students, each in a T-28, in trail. We took off at five minute intervals and set off to fly a 200 + nm route over the sparsely populated countryside of Alabama and Florida.

We’ll soon be at the middle of PAFT’s 20th Anniversary year.
After the May 14th dinner meeting we’ll concentrate on making up for lost flying time with fly-ins to Scranton (KAVP) in May for a coal mine tour, Meyerstown PA (9D4) in June for the Cornwell Iron Furnace tour and Penn’s Cave PA (N74) for the cave tour boat ride.
